The Timeline

There's a lot that goes into the timeline of adoption. Since announcing, many have asked us, "When will you get a baby," or "How far along is the expectant mom?"
Truthfully, we have no idea. And, unfortunately, that's okay.
For those who might be novices about adoption (AKA us about three weeks ago), the process can be lengthy. It's many days of "hurry up and wait." There is also no one, true path when it comes to this. There's international or domestic. Infant or foster-to-adopt. Agencies or consulting firms...
It can be overwhelming, and we know so few people who have adopted. We're lucky to have a couple friend who is walking through the process right now. They were sitting where we are right now, about a year ago. We're thankful for their friendship and, most importantly, their wisdom.
I've talked to those who have adopted, those who are in the process, and those who are adopted. I was initially hoping to find the magic answer, but I found myself tucked deeply into the weeds of it all. So, I figured I'd tell you where we're at and what we understand the process to be:
Home study (in progress)
This could take 2-3 months depending on paperwork.
Did you know that getting an Illinois birth certificate takes 3-6 months?!
Fundraise (in progress)
We're hoping to raise $80,000 (crazy, right?)
This will include: agency costs, expectant mom's medical and living expenses, lawyer fees, travel as needed, ...
Select an agency
There's quite a few.
Wait
Patiently
Wait
Impatiently
Wait
For however long it takes. Could be 6-weeks. Could be 3-years.
Placement
Obviously, there are a few critical steps in between, but for now... one step at a time.
